Democracy Green hires and develops leaders directly from communities. These leaders then lead outreach and transformative change initiatives in their home counties.

In 2021, Democracy Green launched the Environmental Justice Leaders Fellowship and the Critical Environmental Justice Fellowship (a fellowship that prioritizes advocacy for returning citizens and criminal justice reform). A fellow is chosen annually, and through this seasonal fellowship, selected applicants undergo a series of trainings that include: environmental justice 101, eco-advocacy, social issues at the intersection, and in-community campaign development.
